Camera License
To connect to a camera, a license per camera channel is required. In total, for all copies of the product installed under this license, the product may only be used with as many cameras as you have purchased camera licenses for. • Video encoders connected to multiple analog cameras require a camera license per channel to operate. • Camera licenses can be purchased in any numbers. To extend the installation with additional camera licenses, the SLC is required when ordering.
Clients - Unlicensed
The XProtect Smart Client and Remote Client are not licensed and can be installed and used on any number of computers.

System overview
1. Recording server
The recording server is the core of XProtect Essential. It has several functions:
Connection to each IP camera and IP video encoder
Recording of video and audio
Receive events and activate pre-defined alerts and actions
Host and control access from XProtect clients
Logging of activity
Management is done directly on the recording server in an included administrator module.
Included is a viewer that lets the operator/administrator browse and view video data. The viewer is attached directly to the recording server.
2. Management application
The management application provides a clear overview and easy access to configuration data, device settings, user definitions, etc. It offers system configuration wizards, automated device discovery, and smart bulk configuration. You can also export/import system and user configuration data and automatic system restore points.
3. XProtect Smart Client
This advanced and full-featured access client provides operators with all daily functions, such as live view and playback from 26 cameras, intelligent Pan-Tilt-Zoom (PTZ) functions, advanced search functions and export of evidence material.
There is also a browser-based Remote Client offers live view and playback of up to 16 cameras. This lets operators perform most daily operations via almost any web browser.
Product Maintenance Agreements
A Milestone Product Maintenance Agreement (PMA) entitles you to free access to product upgrades. The PMA is a contract that runs 1 or more years at a time and is purchased along with a new product, or if you purchase a product upgrade.

The price of a PMA is approximately 18% of the recommended retail price of the XProtect products. By selecting one of the long-term PMAs (2-5 year PMAs) you can make considerable savings, and therefore optimize your total cost of ownership even more.
How does a PMA work?
When buying an XProtect™ product license, you can choose to buy a PMA at the same time. Under the PMA, all upgrades are completely free of charge for one year. The software upgrades are delivered electronically throughout the year.
How long does it last?
You buy a PMA for up to 5 years at a time. PMA can also be purchased on a daily basis to allow the PMA period to run until a specific date. This is particularly useful if the PMA renewals are to be aligned with calendar or fiscal years, or if you want a coherent PMA coverage on an extended system where additional system components have been purchased in addition to the original system. Before the PMA expires, your Milestone partner will automatically receive e-mails to remind you about renewal.
How is it purchased?
With new purchase: The PMA is only available as part of a new product purchase and not as an add-on to a product that has been purchased previously. If a PMA is purchased, it must be purchased for the base license and the camera licenses. a PMA can not be purchased for just the base license or just the camera licenses.
